Digital team week notes: October 7th - October 11th 2013

11 October, 2013

This post was originally published on The University of Bath's Web Services Blog.

This is our sixth weekly update. Six is the smallest positive integer which is neither a square number nor a prime number and on this occasion we have precisely six things we've been doing to tell you about:

  1. the most obvious thing is that we've updated the font stack we use across the site; previously we had more than 120 rules defined in more than a dozen stylesheets, each specifying about six different fonts. We've centralised and simplified this so that we now just serve two fonts - Raleway and sans-serif. This brings our web pages closer together visually and makes it much easier to make changes in this area with much less work. We'll be tweaking it as we go but this is an awesome start, inspired by recent work on the Research site
  2. after completing our first sprint on the RDSO website last week, we started the second sprint where we're focusing on simplifying access to the most-requested sets of information for academics around proposing then running research projects and how to disseminate information once the project is over. You can read Paul's take on how his first experience working in an agile way went in a previous blog post
  3. during that first sprint our dev team produced an automated tool to help massage content into the way we needed to be able to work with it; this week they've turned that into a re-usable product to help us do the same thing on the sites we're going to work on in the future
  4. on the subject of working with content, we've been busily sorting, migrating, reviewing and restructuring relevant information out of an old site which is about to be shuttered into brand new pages about our commitment to Widening Participation and the Foundation Degrees we offer
  5. relatively speaking we've had a quiet week on support - down to 35 tickets received this week rather than 99 last week; this has given Chris plenty of opportunity to go and take his Relational Database exam in sunny Swindon!
  6. excitingly, we've got three posts in the team we're looking to fill! We're looking for two Content Producers and one Web Editor so if you like the look of the work we've been writing about, and want to be part of the platform we're building for a community of thousands then get your application in now!

Til next week, adios!
