Digital team week notes: Feb 24 - Feb 28, 2014

28 February, 2014

Welcome to the end of February! It's been a short month but that doesn't mean there's been any lack of activity chez Digital.

We're now just waiting to press the button on the new Agresso website, and Paul has written about some of the user testing we did for that site. Whilst our fingers were hovering over that button, we slammed our collective palms on the "launch" button for the new Student Finance pages which should help that healthy body of fee-payers understand how, when and how much to pay.

Whilst that was going on, we've started a wide-ranging project to revamp, reinvigorate and (slightly) professionalise our blogging platform, including blog categorisation, new blog themes and moving it to external hosting to allow us to stay up to date with the latest version more easily. More news on this in the coming weeks.

On the topic of improving existing services, we've been working with our colleagues in the Corporate Communications Events Team to make our existing Open Days webpages friendlier and easier to understand for potential visitors. Part of this work has been to rethink how we present the Open Days information by analysing site visitor trends compared to what we're trying to tell people at different times of the year, which has given us some beautiful paper prototypes which I'm looking forward to seeing become a reality!

Taking a step beyond the existing Open Days pages we've started working on user stories for an online alternative to visiting the campus in person, since the physical Open Days are more popular than we currently have capacity for! It's nice to see that scalability isn't always just a software problem.

The Public Lectures pages are in need of some love and so we've been looking at how those pages are managed and promoted, and how many different systems there are currently providing this style of information so that we can slim it all down into an accessible, strongly-branded and well-packed product.

Making noise about the high quality of the research which takes place at the University is going to be important for us this year, so we've been taking a look at how we can bundle up multiple related research stories which we might not normally consider together, as single pieces of long-form content. The potential here is huge and would be a great way of making a splash so we're looking forward to getting our teeth into this new area of content design.

We're also starting discovery work for rebuilds of the Library, Purchasing Services and ICIA sites so there's been analytics, heatmaps and goal-setting ahoy.

And finally, you will be delighted to hear that we have all taken and passed our official University fire safety training. So, in true Ghostbusters style, if something's on fire, and it don't look good, who ya gonna call? Campus security on extension 666, of course.
